Hi,

I'm new to austin. What's the most authentic (not watered down for
American tastes) Thai restaurant in Austin?

I haven't been to Thailand, so I can't attest to authenticity. However,
Thai Kitchen's staff is all Thai and they have lots of Thai customers
too. Try ordering something from the special menu, see how you like it.
Madam Mam's is also great, and both the owner and the cook are Thai.
Probably our favorite asian restaurant in Austin.
Both are on Guadalupe on/near campus.

You'll get plenty of opinions on this subject. I find I like some of the not
so authentic restaurants after all, so to each his own.

I can't really attest to authenticity either, but I just don't think anyone
can beat Satay, if only for the unusuality of some of their dishes (which
are a mix of Thai, Malaysian, Vietnamese). They have bitchin' curries, and
the kampung udang (I think that's how you spell it), is one of the most
phenomenal joys you will ever experience. It is served in a "hor mok" plate
so you have to dine in, but that is half the fun! Order some ridiculous
fruity drinks, and I would advise you to stick with the curries, as a lot of
things are the menu may be a little too adventurous or just plain weird.

They also have a to-go joint up open next door during the day so it's even
easier to just grab some lunch.

I think the address is 3202 W. Anderson Ln. (it's at the NW intersection of
Shoal Creek Blvd. and Anderson Ln.)

Thai Tara on W. 6th St., across from the Star Bar. Good food --- Yupa,
the owner, is Thai and the cook is Thai as well. Very friendly staff.
Sit at the bar and order take-out --- Yupa might offer to let you vet
some potential new appetizers.

Although I still miss Ped's Lemongrass Grill ...

now *THAT* is clever (and will get me into the door there RSN! :)
Although I still miss Ped's Lemongrass Grill ...
what the hell happened to them? I don't recall hearing the *real* story yet...
(I went to the original one out on 620 couple of years ago and chatting with
some of the people there I got a real *bad* feeling about the personal dynamics
there... it didn't feel right, left me with doubts I couldn't really explain
well at the time -- but I'm not surprised, really, after the fact...)

I never got the real story either --- I just heard that he left town
quickly owing a lot of people a lot of money. Who knows if *that's*
even true.

Oh well, at least I got to experience his Pad Kee Mao before he split.
Thai Hot and The. Best. Ever.
