OK, here, once again, is a list of restaurants I haven't eaten at that got some
mention or other in the Austin Chronicle Restaurant Poll
(http://www.austinchronicle.com/gbase/Awards/RestaurantPoll?display=Index&Year=200
4). I thought I would solicit opinions as to which, if any, were worth going to,
Aquarelle
Very good. Not exactly haute cuisine, more like rustic french cuisine
prepared with expertise and style. Excellent wine selection.
Asti Trattoria
Fun and good. The waiters know the wine list well. Their gnocchi is
different from what you might expect; they are the "Roman Gnocchi"
variety, large and flat.
Bellagio Italian Bistro
Going downhill, IMO. First time I went, I had squid-ink ravioli and osso
bucco, and both were wonderful. The second time, I had some kind of
steak that was over-seasoned. The third time, the ravioli seemed warmed
over.
Korea Garden
Good for Austin, but everything's too sweet. Don't order tea there.
The Oasis on Lake Travis
Never had a good meal there. I hear they've tried to improve; they may
merit another attempt.
Pluckers Wing Factory & Grill
The best wings I've had in Austin. Get a 32-ounce Purple Haze draft to
wash them down.
Siena Ristorante Toscana
I know they have their fans in this ng, but I'm not one of them. Their
appetizers are great, but I've been disappointed with every main course
I've had there.
The Driskill Grill
Very entertaining, and the food is wonderful. This is the best dining
experience I've had in Austin. The chef does an "amuse bouche" which is
off-menu but included with every meal, and is delightful. Each dish is
prepared with finesse. The wine selection is pricey, though.
Uchi
Easily the best sushi in Austin. They often have bluefin tuna, and
sometimes they have three different kinds: maguro, toro and o-toro. When
they do, order all three and eat them as a flight. Repeat until full.
Skip the hot rock; that's a gimmick. Definitely go for the yakitori,
it's much better than most. They also have a great sake selection. Try
"Wandering Poet" and "Divine Droplets".
